Multi-IMSI (Multiple International Mobile Subscriber Identities)

What is Multi-IMSI (Multiple International Mobile Subscriber Identities)?

Multi-IMSI technology allows a single SIM or eSIM to store and manage multiple International Mobile Subscriber Identities (IMSIs) — the unique identifiers that connect a device to a mobile network. A multi-IMSI SIM card or eSIM can seamlessly switch between different mobile network operator (MNO) profiles without requiring the SIM to be replaced or the device to be manually reconfigured.

This capability provides global, uninterrupted connectivity, particularly for IoT (Internet of Things) and M2M (Machine-to-Machine) deployments that operate across multiple regions or network partners.

How it Works

Each IMSI corresponds to a specific operator network profile. In a multi-IMSI SIM, several IMSIs are securely stored and can be activated based on predefined rules or conditions, such as:

  • Geographical location – selecting the most suitable local operator when crossing borders.
  • Signal strength or availability – switching automatically if a preferred network becomes unavailable.
  • Cost or policy parameters – choosing the most cost-effective network according to the connectivity plan.

When the active IMSI changes, the SIM connects to the new network automatically, without user intervention and without losing connectivity.

Why Multi-IMSI Matters?

  • Global coverage: Devices can roam seamlessly across countries and regions while staying connected.
  • Resilience and redundancy: If one operator’s network fails or degrades, another IMSI can be activated instantly.
  • Cost optimization: Allows dynamic use of local networks to reduce roaming and data charges.
  • Simplified logistics: One SIM SKU can support multiple markets and operators, streamlining global IoT deployments.
  • Interoperability: Works with standard cellular technologies and complements eUICC / eSIM and Remote SIM Provisioning (RSP) solutions.

Multi-IMSI in IoT and eSIM Ecosystems

Combined with Remote SIM Provisioning, multi-IMSI helps manufacturers, MNOs, and IoT service providers deploy devices globally, with automatic, secure, and standards-compliant network switching.

This ensures devices maintain continuous coverage, improved uptime, and simplified lifecycle management, which is essential for applications such as smart meters, logistics tracking, automotive telematics and industrial IoT.
