Kigen welcomes SORACOM’s commercial launch of iSIM technology and modules

Today, Soracom, is pleased to announce the commercial launch of its integrated SIM technology (iSIM) as well as an iSIM-compatible cellular module with Kigen’s Secure iSIM OS, which provides robust secure authentication services ensuring reliable out-of-the-box connectivity for commercial iSIM applications.

January 23, 2025 – Kigen Partnership News – iSIM

Soracom, Inc., a global IoT platform provider with full MVNO capability, has announced the commercial launch of its iSIMs as well as an iSIM-compatible cellular module built off of the Murata Type 1SC. The deployment of integrated SIM (iSIM) technologies has been underway at Soracom since July 2021, bolstered by collaborations with prominent industry stakeholders. Notable partners include Sony Semiconductor Israel, which specializes in Internet of Things (IoT) chipsets; Murata, a manufacturer of iSIM modules; and Kigen, the global disruptor that pioneered iSIM security solutions.

Kigen’s iSIM operating system presents substantial advantages for IoT implementations. It facilitates the design of smaller devices, optimizes power consumption, and offers robust authentication services, ensuring reliable connectivity and reducing manufacturing costs.

The iSIM (Integrated SIM) is embedded within a specific area of a system-on-chip (SoC) and is safeguarded by a tamper-resistant element (TRE). Its compact and streamlined design combines the microcontroller unit (MCU), radio, and iSIM operating system into a single module. This integration reduces the bill of material from three to one, enabling IoT device manufacturers to create smaller, more efficient products while streamlining supply chains.

These technical benefits also result in commercial benefits, enabling IoT device manufacturers to create more compact, lightweight, and more power-efficient devices, as fewer physical components are required.

Designing connected devices with a single, integrated solution for both the communication module and the SIM reduces procurement, logistics, and storage costs. It also contributes to reduced environmental impact throughout the device manufacturing and sales lifecycle.

Soracom’s connectivity with iSIM modules

The “Type 1SC” module from Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. comes with a plan01s subscription from Soracom, enabling users to connect to cellular networks worldwide easily. By utilizing Soracom’s subscription container feature, these modules can access a variety of data plans, including planX3, specifically designed for LPWAN applications.

Regardless of the chosen plan, users benefit from Soracom’s comprehensive connectivity tools, including data and device security, remote provisioning services, and seamless cloud integration. Additionally, Soracom provides an evaluation board kit (EVK) for customers who want to test iSIM integration before fully committing to deployment. This iSIM evaluation kit can support NTN-IoT services and GNSS.
